Curriculum

At the Mary Francis Bachmann School our curriculum unfolds as our students develop, skillfully meeting each student’s unique needs and calling them forward on a journey to becoming lifelong learners, inventors, problem solvers, and peacemakers. An experientially-based approach to learning, our curriculum

  • cultivates the sense of wonder in our youngest learners;
  • connects children to their treasured place in the world and our own community;
  • inspires teens along their journey to discovering their true selves;
  • ignites the creativity and imagination of young adults as they emerge and engage the world around them.

The magic of all of this happens in a warm, supportive environment held by caring teachers and staff and embraced by the families of our students. At the Mary Francis Bachmann School, learning does not happen in isolation. Learning happens in context, experienced with and within the world around us.

The Lower School

Grades 1 through 4

As children enter the lower school and begin their journey in more formal learning, they bring with them a sense of wonder at the world taking shape around them. The Lower School Curriculum uses stories, arts, music and movement to welcome the child into the community. The various learning activities, lessons and programs create lasting connections with classmates and teachers. Throughout the Lower School Curriculum, students build upon the foundations of their shared school community and move forward in their development, both discovering the marvels of our world and learning about themselves as individuals with unique gifts, talents and interests.

The Middle School

Grades 5 through 8

Middle School marks a transition in our students’ engagement with learning. Throughout early childhood and the lower school, students at the Mary Francis Bachmann School engaged subjects as active explorers. They engaged new areas of interest, discovered new skills and cultivated new talents throughout their lower school experience. In middle schools, our students start to think more critically. The Middle School curriculum encourages students to begin to contemplate why the world is ordered as it is. They thoughtfully challenge the status quo. They engage in debate with reasoned arguments that are grounded in facts they have learned, feelings they have experienced and values they are beginning to shape. Our approach to learning challenges students to grow each of these skills,all of which combine to form the solid foundation for an engaging and impactful future.

The Upper School

Grades 9 through 12

Unfolding into the adults they aspire to be, students attending the Upper School at the Mary Francis Bachmann School are engaged in an expansive curriculum that incorporates individual and group learning, exploration, discussion, and discovery. The curriculum cultivates our students’ skills of analytical thinking, problem-solving, innovation, and creativity necessary to fully participate in civic engagement within their community and the world. While continuing to explore core subjects – math, science, literature and history – Upper School students are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions through internships, seminars and summer learning opportunities and are challenged to engage with topics and subject areas they may feel less drawn to at first glance. Through their engagement with the curriculum, our unique learning opportunities and impactful experiences through service learning, our students graduate confident, compassionate, committed, and well-rounded individuals ready to contribute to their community.
